Patient Comfort in Victorville, CA

Feeling nervous about oral surgery is normal, and you shouldn't have to simply push through it. At Victorville Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Center, your comfort is part of the plan from your first visit. We take the time to listen and explain your options clearly before treatment begins. As Dr. Chu puts it, “I'm always honest with my patients and serve them as I would serve my family.”

Because we offer local anesthetic, nitrous oxide, IV sedation, and general anesthesia here in our office, Dr. Chu can match your care to the procedure you need and to how you feel about it. He will go over the choices with you during your initial visit. If something about dental treatment worries you, such as needles or a past visit that went badly, please tell us. Knowing ahead of time helps us make your appointment easier.

Local anesthetic

Most procedures start with local anesthetic, which numbs the area being treated. You stay awake and may feel some pressure, but you shouldn't feel pain. For smaller treatments, such as a simple extraction or a biopsy, it may be all you need. It can also be combined with nitrous oxide, IV sedation, or general anesthesia.

Nitrous oxide (laughing gas)

If you would like help relaxing, nitrous oxide is a gentle option. You breathe it through a small mask over your nose, and within a few minutes you begin to feel calmer. You stay awake and can talk with us the whole time, and the effect fades soon after the mask comes off. It works well for patients who feel uneasy but would rather stay alert.

IV sedation

With IV sedation, medication is given through a small IV in your arm. You feel deeply relaxed and drowsy, and many patients remember little of the procedure afterward. It works well for longer procedures and for patients who feel more anxious about treatment. You will need an adult to drive you home afterward.

General anesthesia

With general anesthesia, you are fully asleep during your procedure and won't be aware of it. Dr. Chu may suggest it for more involved surgery, such as removing several teeth at once, or if you would rather sleep through your treatment. General anesthesia is provided right here in our office.

Preparing for your visit

A little preparation helps your appointment go smoothly. Please follow these guidelines:

  • If you are having IV sedation or general anesthesia, don't eat or drink anything for 8 hours beforehand.
  • Take your usual morning medications with a small sip of water.
  • Bring an adult driver who can stay at the office during your visit.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing with short sleeves.
  • Patients under 18 need a parent or guardian with them.

After your procedure

Plan to take it easy for the rest of the day, and follow the instructions we give you before you leave. Some soreness and swelling are normal after oral surgery. If something doesn't feel right once you're home, or you have a question, call our office at 760-952-1900.
